recap

ok. i havnt written anything for a while so i think i will give it a shot again.. I will try and fill you in with what has been happening since the last time.

yesteday the family came over to celebrate mothers day at he house.
the day before was the house party we had. this party started around 7 o'clock and didnt end until 5 am. Music, people and dancing filled the night. And i had my first encounter with something that really struck me odd.. here. unlike in the US the way you motion for someone to "come here" is by pointing you hand toward them and moving it up and down. whereas in the us we face our hand toward us and motion the direction we want them to come....maybe that was a little confusing so here is a visual.

I just thought it was wierd/confusing because these people that came to the party said "venga" and motioned what i thought was go away so i was very confused..

today i guess we are going to a pueblo. Not sure what we are doing yet but we will see!!!

mmm

wowzers

Buenos dias, yesterday was my first real day of being in Colombia. After waking up and eating breakfast, we went out to juans school, EAFIT. The school here is a little bit different than in Lincoln because the school is fenced off and you have to check in upon entering. Once inside I met some of juans friends and future buyer of juans computer. Juan had class at two so we just hung out until then. We ate in one of the cafeterias but we had to run through the rain first to get there. It is winter down here right now so it rains a lot. So far it has rained three times in two days. After eating we went to pass more time. This is when I met juans girlfriend. She was very nice. We hung out a little and then we went to class. I joined juan and marcela in their photoshop class. It was a little akward at first but I tried to follow along with juans computer the best I could. After about an hour we got bored(cause we already knew that stuff, duh) and left. We grabbed a taxi and went back to juans house. By this time I was exhausted for some reason and fell asleep. When we woke up Jose, one of juans old friends, came over and we got ready and went out. We went to crepes and waffles, a restaurant (the name is pretty descriptive). This is in a very nice mall. We ate for a while and then just walked around. We met some girls in to Puma store that were fun. We asked them (or juan asked them, because of my lack of ability to speak as of now) if they wanted to go out with us. Suprisingly they accepted and we waited outside the store for them to get off work. Alejandra and Natalia joined us but we could all fit in one taxi so we had to take two. The driving here is crazy and although the other taxi with the girls left first, we ended up beating them there because our driver apparently doesn’t believe in stop lights. We went to a little place and sat outside and just hung out. This was really hard for me because they were all talking but I couldn’t understand anything. I wish I could communicate better right now. I know I will pick it up eventually but right now it sucks. We were right next door to a casino so we juan, natalia and I went in to check it out. We ended up playing some electronic poker game (but is was mostly the worker that did everything for us). I would just push the button to pick the card higher than the other card to double our money. (sorry I don’t know poker terms better) So after tripling what we came in with we joined Jose and Alejandra back outside. Alejandra and Natalia had to leave so we saw them off but invited them to go dancing with us on Friday. Throughout the whole night when the waitress would come over I would ask her how she was doing and speak to her in English. She would just look at me and smile cause she didn’t understand me. When she braught the check she started talking to me, asking where I was from and if I had a novia. She gave me a kiss on the cheek so I wouldn’t feel like such an outcast and I felt better about my time being here.
But this isn’t where our night ends. We grabbed a taxi, Jose Juan and I to pick up David, and then to pick up another friend and a dog. 5 guys and a dog in a taxi looking for something to eat. We found a street vender and we all stopped to grab some arepas. They were very good. I had some chicken on a stick and potatos and an arepa. I was stuffed afterwards.
So this is where our night ends. Lets see whats in store for tomorrow.

Arrival

Last night I arrived at the Medellin airport around 9 30. I got through customs with no problems and i walked outside where all the people were standing, waiting for their loved ones to walk out that door. I looked around for my loved ones but they werent to be found. Long story short i waited about 15 minutes in a different country where i dont speak the language %100 until juan and alejandro walked up. explaining the story of how the road was closed so they had to take several detours. After the long windy drive from the airport to the city, we arrived at juans familys house. I walked up into the house and they all hugged me and welcomed me. A banner hanging on the wall said " Lance, bienvenido a medellin' and they hung an arepa "lay" around my neck. After settling in a bit, we ate some very good food. beans, rice, arepa, cafe con leche. and then went to sleep after a long day of international traveling.

Buh!!!

So im sitting here in FL. And finally realizing im going to Colombia, South America in two days. It has never seemed real until now. I told Juan i was going to come down. I believed i would but it didnt seem real. I bought my ticket, didnt seem real. Two weeks away, one week away.. didnt seem real. i guess its because i had so much stuff to do before i left that it didnt really have time to slowly set it. I think it still hasnt fully. Not until i get on that plane on tuesday and look out the window and see the ocean will it fully seems real. But for now im in florida. Merlin, Derrick and I (and merlins mother) went to Full Sail today to check out our not so distant future school!!!! very excited. it was way cool. i cannot wait to start there. they had this whole "behind the scenes" tour thing that was awesome. if you ever are thinking about going or are just interested and are in the orlando area on the day of the tour. go cause they pull out all the stops i guess. but we checked out both the film and digital arts programs and they both look sweet. i cant wait to double major!!! (merlin teaches me everything from his degree, and vice versa) but thats all for now i guess. now i have nothing else left to do but board the plane. Y habla estaƱol!
