Film. plus or minus??

I decided it has been a long time since i shot on film. i thought i would take this vintage nikon f and put it to the test.

this camera is all metal, completely manual, including the film advance lever. the light meter is hardly a meter. it has a needle that bounces from over exposed to under and a prime 1.4 lens. but the truth is i love it.

i just got my photos developed and after eager anticipation. they turned out sour. 1 roll was completely ruined. and the other is obviously my first roll on film in a while.

so.

film is tough
film is raw

good or bad?

this was a photo shot before i got the light meter working. i metered with a digital camera and then tweaked from there.
what do you think?

Commercial

We shot a commercial, finally after a ridiculous amount of confusion and rejection.

here are a few shots from the commercial. i think it came out pretty good.

production

Twilight Zone came and went.

all that preproduction; hours of planning lighting schemes and shot lists, waking up at 4 am with an idea, stressing about locations. over

i want more. production went well, or well enough for a "first time" doing a production. Things were learned and i want to do it again.

12 hours overnight seemed like nothing.

i will post some production stills soon.

these are a few shots from my product in its environment shoot.

99 bananas

dont especially care for it. bad shadows.

doesnt make sense
do you know why?

i got to have some words with one of my lighting instructors about my shots. Ralph happens to be a fashion photographer that has worked in japan, europe and miami.
He criticized my shots and tore me down.
in a good way of course. i was more than appreciative for his advice. he brought up good points. it was great getting his professional advice. i am going to try to take advantage of his experience and hopefully learn alot from him

but i would also like your comments, opinions, advice, criticism

for real, be honest. i know i am not a professional and i never will be if i dont learn as much as i can from everybody and accept peoples criticism so..

until later

beach in february!! (pics coming soon)

This weekend past was one of the most fun that i have had since being down here. We had the weekend off from class which was awesome. it always feels good to get a wee break from class. so what did we do you ask. WENT TO THE BEACH!!

Friday we headed out to cocoa for some fun in the sun!

we hung out there all day surfing (or trying to), skim boarding, playing football, soccer, Frisbee on the beach, flipping off the little ledge.

it was some good ol fun.

then saturday we had to keep up the momentum,

so we hit the lake with the boat. did some wakeskating and such. after we depleted the sunshine we grilled some burgers and dogs in the backyard and relaxed.

but we werent done yet!!

we then headed over to Sun Key to play some late night sand volleyball (which i havnt played since the termination of VBS)
needless to say. my team got rocked. i dont know what was going on but we just couldnt pull it together.

oh well. next time!!

so by the time sunday came around i was SO tired. my body was sore and ached in every area. i am not used to this much physical activity. but it felt good. i really enjoyed being out in the sun and doing physical activites with some friends.. good times.

This month i started my beginning lighting class. I LOVE IT. i finally feel like i am in film school. we get to play with the lights all day and set up cool scenes. there is so much to learn about lighting. its funny because everything in lighting is code. like they have code names for everything, and they are the most ridiculous names around.

here are some pics from my labs so far.

behind the scenes shot of one of our three point lighting shoots.

one of our shots

another shot taken in the bar. we had the light coming through the window with the blinds. we used a alot of contrast. like a 16:1.

so thats what ive been doing. I have another lighting lab here in a few hours so i will be learning so more.

photo challenge

these are some shots from josh NIX and my photo shoot over christmas vacation. the challenge was that we had 1 downtown block to shoot several frames. we were interested to see what each other would come up with and how we would shoot. until now, josh hasnt seen my photos nor i his. well here they are. i only got three frames in the 10 minute time frame.

in the studio

this is a cell phone photo (since that seems to be the popular photo type these days) of a recording arts friend setting up for out recording session. my buddy travis wrote a rap about our computers, math and the internet class and i was fortunate enough to get to make a fool out of my self laying down some flat vocals for the track. we are shooting the music video tomorrow so with any luck it will be up on youtube in no time. oh i love technology these days! (juan g. 2006)

and this is a cd cover i made for my cmi class using none other that "GIMP" (a sore excuse for photoshop, i cringe at the thought!)

Cloverfield

in all honesty i went into the movie with low expectations.

and i feel that to merely say that the movie was better than i expected doesnt say much.

I would say my overall vibe of the movie was... i liked it!!

lets break it down.

So. we went out on thursday night and caught the midnight showing of cloverfield.

the story surface level.. it was a "slice of life" story (like my previous creative writing instructors would say)

It was a slice of life in the sense that we started at a party- got minor background info (sufficient amount to work for the movie) then a disaster struck. then we follow them on their journey.

so all in all the story line was mediocre but worked in this specific situation so i cant complain..

Cinematography-

an interesting approach on movie making to say the least.
it was done completely hand held "home video" style.
This gave an interesting aspect adding to the slice of life factor.

concerns with this style.
it was hard to follow at times. i found myself needing reference points to keep from puking my lungs out. (note the brooklyn bridge scene)
*not recommended for those with weak stomachs and easy motion sickness

Special FX

i must give the special FX team mad props. Not only were the special FX good, but the fact that they had to sit there and key frame out every single frame of the entire movie since its shot hand held: there are no reference points to go with, rendering this project a beast.. for any of you who know about keyframing or keystoning or rendering any kind of 2d, oe 3d object..

Acting. mediocre.
sometime i felt the acting lagged a little. phrases like "what is that?" "whats going on?" "what should we do" came up a lot and i found it repetitive and unprofessional. (not that "real people" would be "professional" but it reminded me of a bad improve job.

but in all the did good, working with CG crap and everything.

so. thats cloverfield.

i realize i was quite harsh but all in all i would see it again.. i might pop a few dremamine before returning though.

tell me what you thought!!!

love

thinking

i thought i would write a blog with words, cause i dont do this much.

i am currently sitting on my couch.

i just bought a new tv today so i have my computer hooked to my tv with my bluetooth keyboard and merfs bt mouse here.
its quite nice. i like it.

whats new?

i started class today after the "long" (its all relative) winter break. i was excited. WAS is the word to be stressed.

the class is computers, math and the internet.. (thats one class folks) i didnt think it would be too bad coming into it.
i mean. i am already pretty much a nerd so i should already know loads of stuff. and actually the class itself i dont think will be too bad.

but MAN was it boring today. our instructors are the typical "dungeons and dragons" pc nerds. not that im judging. :)
anyway, class was boring today. we will see how it goes.

but as far as the rest of my Florida life...

i am excited to be back down here. who knows what G-d has in store for me. who would have known i would be here at all?

status was really cool last night. we are going to be beginning a three month series on JESUS with is awesome. im super pumped for that because i desperately want to know more.

anyhoo.

sorry for putting you through this..
maybe next time i will have something insightful to say.

but im not a wordsmith so i wouldnt hold your breath.

and since i cannot do a blog with a photo. here you are
